A Case Study. BuzzMug.com – $500 Startup to an $80,000 Sale in One Year

 

In February of 2008, AIM launched BuzzMug.com, an online e-tailer of coffee, travel mugs and other items for coffee and tea. The goal was to create a business that was not only able to be run out of a home, but simple enough so that it could be run successfully by the average person. Lastly, the goal was to make this business successful enough that it could continue to earn a profit and help support a family.

BuzzMug.com began with a starting budget of $500. It also began with a lot of experience and know-how. Behind smart planning, relationship building and search engine marketing, BuzzMug.com was launched.

The first year in business, the site grossed sales near six-figures. It ranked top three for its primary search terms, and was earning all income from non-paid organic search engine advertising. Note, the first three months (at a minimum) of any new site launch cannot be counted in sales numbers. This is because it takes at least this long to make it into any sort of search engine ranking.

The site was sold in March of 2009.

We purchased BuzzMug.com from {AIM} in March of 2009, a year after its inception. We were drawn to the website because of its attractive design, its well-thought out theme and products and its high Google rankings. A year later, we are extremely pleased with the continued success of the website. Sales increased 30%, year to year, from 2008 to 2009.

We have spent virtually nothing on advertising and marketing and have page one Search Engine rankings because of Matt’s knowledge and expertise in Search Engine Optimization. A third party SEO consultant recently told us that BuzzMug.com was designed perfectly to generate high search results. And, in fact, she was planning to use it as an example for her clients of how to design a website for good SEO.
