Nearly 1,000 wildland firefighting teachers, students and support staff will be in Prescott today through Friday for the 8th annual Arizona Wildfire & Incident Management Academy.
About 15-20 percent of the students are coming from out of state this year, more than ever before, Academy Coordinator Tony Sciacca said.
“The academy is gaining a reputation as the premier academy in the country,” Sciacca said.
More people from out of state also means more people staying in local hotels. Several have offered student discounts.

Research released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows Internet usage in Arizona is slightly higher than the national average. In addition, household Internet use across the country continues to grow.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 74.3 percent of Arizonans live in a household with Internet access. That translates to more than 4.6 million people ages 3 and older. The national rate is 73.5 percent — meaning nearly 213 million Americans have Internet access at home.

Helping Local Schools and an Apprenticeship Program
I recently had the opportunity to participate in the Career & Technical Education (CTE) board meeting at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. This was an annual meeting that brought together local business leaders and facilty from the area schools to discuss the trends and current progams offered to our high school students.
This was my first introduction to these programs, and I was proud of what I saw. Thanks to the recently passed JTED (Joint Technical Education Disctricts), our schools are offering more in the way of technical training. One of the programs that Bradshaw Mountain offers is Computer Graphics and Web Design Development. This was the program that I participated in. Read more
